A Taste of Sheryl’s Art Work

Number 50: I studied BA (Art) at Michaelis, majoring in Painting. I also studied History  of Art, World Religions and Pedagogy. I subsequently did a 1 year Post Graduate Teaching Diploma to qualify as an Art Teacher.

In our lounge at our 15 Alamein Road Home are many art works that l have created over the years. The large orange and yellow painting with the gold frame was part of a Final Year theme at Michaelis on Pumpkins. We had to spend the year painting one subject (only!) continually.

To the left are two of four ceramic tiles that l made with South African themes. The top one depicts SA flowers next to a Jungle Oats Box. The one below shows strelitzias and Mrs Balls Chutney. Making large ceramic tiles can be challenging as they tend to curl at the ends when drying, so it was a relief that all 4 (including two to the left of the photo) came out of the kiln without cracking.

I also did a series of decoupaged chairs on different places that we have travelled to. The chair in the photograph is the “Cape Town” chair.

I made a series  of 11 large pots. The theme was South African flowers as well as inspirational statements and quotes .This project took a long time and was completed at the end of  2013. I subsequently needed a shoulder operation as my rotator cuff had been damaged through the process!

The vessels are on a beautiful French antique table which can be reduced in size as needed, purchased at De Waterkant. Behind, the woodcut on the wall is by Cecil Skotnes who l always admired as an artist – inherited from my parents.  To the right of the Skotnes is a wonderful painting by Wendy Anzizka. I had seen this painting in Kalk Bay Modern when buying glazes for my ceramics. I really liked it and told Ray that l thought we would enjoy it. So we took it home on appro. Once Ray saw it, we decided to buy it and have not regretted it at all!
