Marcelle and Solly on their Wedding Day 21/03/1954

Number 02: Raymond and David Schkolne’s parents married on 21/03/1954 in the Great Synagogue, Gardens, Cape Town.

While dating our parents loved walking on the mountainside around Cape Town. Solomon, five years older than Marcelle, returned from Egypt and Italy in the 2nd World War, completed a Master’s Degree (Cum Laude) in History and was in process of becoming an Attorney at Law.  “Cella” worked as an Administrator at a Wynberg business. An unlikely union!  They were very different one from the other. “Cella” was warm and sociable. Solly was intellectual with strong political views.

Their respective family backgrounds created an unusual blend of different Jewish routes through history. Solly’s family came from Lithuania – many generations of Rabbis and Scholars living in different Shtetl’s. Marcelle’s family lived for some generations in Amsterdam Holland. Her father’s side tracing back to a range of European Countries including Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria. Also Curacao, Suriname and Brazil! and in earlier generations from Persia, Babylon and Canaan! Her mother’s side from Northern Holland and Southern Germany, with many Rabbis and Jewish Scholars on both her Maternal and Paternal side.

Their relationship was volatile and also caring! Sol spent huge energy on his political views and activism. He would persistently “hold forth” in social situations while Marcelle sought peace and quiet, entreating Sol in vain to focus on his legal practice and deliver more financial stability. Their health deteriorated in later years. After suffering for years inter alia with heart disease, diabetes and neuropathy, Shlomo’s left leg was amputated in November 1999. Cella subsequently suffered from debilitating dementia. Their care for each other in their last years was something to behold – Marcelle for Solly before dementia set on and Solly, with all his medical issues, for Marcelle. He would take her blood pressure and sugar level each day. Marcelle drove the car and Solly gave directions!  They so looked forward to the small treats in life – going to the Spurs for lunch each Sunday prominent among them.

Solly passed away on the 21/08/2011 which marked 57 years and 5 months of marriage.
