Beryl Eden ‘nee Opland and Avrim Eden on the far left and far right respectively. Avrim is late Hymie’s eldest son who changed his name from Paradisgarten to Eden.
Then from the left: Sascha Edelstein; Maya Schkolne; Sheryl Schkolne ‘nee Edelstein; Tamara Hudson ‘nee Eden; Ilana Edelstein; Kevin Shapiro z”l (Avrim’s cousin); Gavriel Ben Zion (son of Sharon ‘nee Rabinowitz and Hillel and grandson of Sylvia and Benjy); Talia Livni ‘nee Rabinowitz; Tim Matteson; Ilana Matteson ‘nee Eden; Solomon Rabinowitz; Louis Sirkin brother of Hymie, Millie, Sylvia, Morris and Fanny; not known

Number 53: Uncle Hymie Paradisgarten (z”l) was turning 83 and celebrating his second Barmitzvah.  It was also the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Aunty Sylvia (z”l) and Uncle Benjy (z”l).  Many of the Paradisgarten family came from the USA, and the Rabinowitz family from Israel and Australia to celebrate.

This hike took place on a Friday. Sascha was a keen hiker. He promised to take us on a memorable hike up Table Mountain. What he had not anticipated was that with so many people, of varying ages and degrees of fitness, the hike would take much longer and be more difficult for most people than he had imagined. Maya was the youngest person on the hike and did outstandingly well. Climbing over the rocks and scrambling up Table Mountain was easy for her. Uncle Louis (z”l) was the oldest and at that stage already ill with Parkinson’s. He had come from Canada to celebrate the Simchot and courageously participated in the hike. Yair decided not to join us as there was a cricket Test match that he wanted to watch on the television!

We finally finished the hike, all severely sunburnt and tired. That evening many of us went to Ruth and Ivan Lipschitz for supper as part of the celebrations.
