“Bowling Cella”

Number 59: Our Mother, Marcelle Schkolne ‘nee a’ Cohen Treves z”l, was an extremely keen bowler. She won a number of tournaments: singles, pairs, trips and fours, at Provincial level playing for Eastern Province, South Africa. She was also the respected President of firstly Summerwood Club in Summerstrand Port Elizabeth and subsequently of Eastern Province, both for a number of years.
She and her fellow bowlers always looked so imperious in their white outfits with brown shoes, red blazers and the incredible hats they wore that made them look so smart.
When the wood came close to the kitty the expression was “bowling”! Bowling Dora! Bowling Minnie! Bowling Joyce!
My mother, Marcelle, was known as Cella by her parents. I have imprinted in my mind the refrain through all the years, on any occasion remotely connected to doing something well or where there was the need to be expressive, my brother David saying: “Bowling Cella”
Through her bowls my mother also demonstrated her excellent administration, leadership and speechmaking qualities.
