Bob Dylan’s Profound Influence through Poetry

Maya and Raymond happily outside the Jewish Museum in Vienna that recognised Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize Award for Literature

Number 119: I can’t figure Bob Dylan the person. But relate personally, intimately to his beyond exceptional poetry.  Limitless thought provoking stories and “one-liners” embedded in multitudinous songs that guide, provoke, inspire, move, excite, trigger profound reflections and questions.

So many in “It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding”:

“To understand you know too soon there is no sense in trying”

“He not busy being born is busy dying”

“You discover that you’d be just one more person crying”

“Don’t hate nothing at all except hatred”

“It’s easy to see without looking to far that not much is really sacred”

“Somebody thinks they really found you”

“A question in your nerves is lit”

“It is not him or she or them or it that you belong to”

“Money doesn’t talk it swears”

“I got nothing Ma to live up to”

Then other songs, the first to mind before I hit my 350 word limit! :

“If you ain’t got nothing you got nothing to lose.”

“There’s a slow train coming up around the bend.”

“Senor can you tell me where we’re heading? This place don’t make sense to me no more.”

“I threw it all away.”

“Come in she said I’ll give you Shelter from the Storm.”

“Something is happening here but you don’t know what it is.”

“Oh my G-d am I here all alone?!”

“Don’t think twice it’s alright.”

“Its no use in turning on your light babe, I’m on the dark side of the road.”

“Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose. Any minute now I’m expecting all hell to break loose.”

“I used to care but things have changed.”

“You’d better start swimming or you’ll sink like a stone.”

“May you stay forever young.”

“But with truth so far off, what good will it do?”

“How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry.”

“Down the foggy ruins of time, through the smoke rings of my mind…”

“Ain’t it hard when you discover that he really wasn’t where it’s at.”

Each one-liner core to the story being told, yet also perfectly self-standingly meaningful!

A Bob Dylan Tracing or Copy I did some decades ago!
Cover of the Gift my HR Colleagues gave me when I retired. My face kind of juxtaposed onto Dylan’s! Given with personal notes from each person and a “Narrative Consultant” “to help you take care of all your memories and create your LIFE STORY in printed form (a published book)”.
