The three a’ Cohen Treves Sisters

This hauntingly beautiful photograph of the three a’ Cohen Treves Sisters in their early twenties
Margaretha born in Amsterdam 8/08/1926 (Right Hand Side)
Marcelle born in Amsterdam 8/11/1927 (Left Hand Side)
Katy born in Cape Town 12/05/1930 Plumstead Nursing Home. (Middle)
I am not sure when the photograph was taken. Perhaps in 1950 (?)
As young girls: From the left: Katy, ‘Cella and Greta

Number 62: Margaretha z”l, the eldest, “Aunty Greta” to me, had two children during her first marriage to Kenneth Penwarden: Sharynne and Kevin. She later married Bill Seddon and lived for many years at 59 Lympleigh Road, Plumstead, Cape Town. I felt very close to Aunty Greta who was incredibly generous to me especially in my Navy years in Cape Town: 1975 and 1976 when I spent many week-ends staying with Aunty Greta and Uncle Bill in Plumstead. When at University of Cape Town, Aunty Greta would pick me up to visit Opa who had sadly suffered a stroke and was living at Highlands House, the Jewish Old Age home.

Sharynne, who now lives in Auckland, New Zealand, has a keen interest in the family history. A librarian by profession, she has researched and written, beautifully, some invaluable family stories that reflect the rich, illustrious and diverse history of our family. Kevin now lives in Cape Town with his wife Debbie after many years of leading substantial businesses in South Africa.

Marcelle z”l, called ‘Cella by her parents, is David and my mother. Wonderfully warm and caring, I hear her singing to me, as I write, in her beautiful, soothing singing voice…..

Katy z”l tragically passed away in the London Hospital where she was working as a nurse, when she was twenty one years old, in 1952, of pneumonia.   She was buried in the Ouderkerk Jewish Cemetery in Amsterdam – where (very!) many of our family members are buried.
