Sheryl and Ilana with Oupa Sascha at Muizenberg Beach

Number 39: We had a family tradition of visiting Oupa, Nanny and Marie every Sunday. My Dad was a very busy Obs-Gynae and would first have to go and check up on his patients at the various  hospitals. We had to sit in the car, winter or summer, until my dad had seen all the patients. We then went past Milly’s in Mill Street to buy bagels and chopped liver and extra treats before we finally got to Muizenberg! My parents were always (!!!) late. Fortunately l love books and could sit in the car and read, but my sisters Ilana and Margo were more restless.

When we finally arrived at Muizenberg it was lunchtime. We would have the bagels and liver, followed by chicken soup and kreplach (soft mince dumplings) and then chicken and salads. Finally we would have dessert. I distinctly remember Marie making us Christmas Cake with little coins in the cake at Christmas time.

After lunch we would all rest. Ilana never rested and rather stayed  awake with Nanny to play cards or read together.

This photograph of Ilana and I on Muizenberg beach flanking Oupa was not common. The wind in Muizenberg usually came up in the afternoon, so by the time we would finally get to the beach after our nap it would be windy. This is a unique memory we have of Oupa with us on the beach.
