Our family in Latin America

Number 15: History woven into one’s own family story becomes so much more meaningful.
Latin American Jewish history began with Sephardi Jews fleeing the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. In the 16th and 17th Centuries the Western Hemisphere’s largest Jewish communities flourished in Brazil, Suriname and Curaçao. In Recife, Brazil, 1636 the America’s first synagogue: “Kahal Zur Israel” was established.
Our family’s Duarte Heitor Antonio Senior Sarayva, Alias: David Saraiva, born 1566, Amarante, Porto, Portugal was a Merchant and Planter. He married three times including to our maternal ancestor Antonia nee Henriquez in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, both buried in “Antigo Cemitério Israelita de Recife”. Duarte’s family traces back numerous generations from Jerusalem to Babylon, Spain, Cork in Ireland, France, Spain (again) and Portugal. Aaron Antonio Levie Montenzinos, born 1604, Vila Flor, Braganca, Portugal left for Recife, Brazil where he died in 1648. Our Brazilian families left for Netherlands, with surnames through generations including Senior Coronel, Nunes Vaz and a’ Cohen Treves – my late mother’s z”l surname.
On 11/01/2020 Sheryl and I visited the old Nidhe Israel (Synagogue of Scattered of Israel) in Bridgetown Barbados. The complex includes a long lost mikveh recently restored, cemetery with Jewish graves from 1660, a Jewish Museum.
Some Jews who fled Portugal for Brazil, fled again some for Barbados, when Inquisitorial Portugal captured “Dutch Brazil” in 1654. No family there but moving to see many of our “Portuguese” family names embedded within the Community of Barbados.
Direct Ancestors lived in the 17th and 18th Centuries in Caribbean: Curacao for some generations: “Namias De Crasto” s previously from Lisbon Portugal and Hamburg Germany, “Oheb Brandon” and “de Pas y Donaogt” from Schleswig Holstein, Germany and the “Carilho”s from Antwerp Belgium and Netherlands. Subsequent surnames included Nunes Lopes Dias, Oeb Brandon, a’ Cohen Treves.
Paramaribo, Capital of Dutch Suriname, was home to a special Jewish Community that had fled the Inquisition and to which our family migrated – the “Lopes Jessurun”s. Also “Mello”s from Den Haag and Teixeira’s from Amsterdam, returning to Netherlands within a generation. Subsequent surnames in this line were Vigevano and a’ Cohen Treves.
Photographs reflect the Synagogue interiors of:
- Kahal Zur Israel “Congregation of the Rock of Israel” originally built in 1636 – first synagogue in the Americas
- Nidhe Yisrael “The Scattered of Israel” in Bridgetown Barbados, Built 1654 and rebuilt after destroyed by hurricane in 1831
- Mikvé Israel “The Hope of Israel” – Emanuel 1674, rebuilt in 1730. Mahogany Bimah with sand floor
- Neve Shalom “Builders of Peace” Ashkenazi Synagogue, with sand floor, built 1719, enlarged 1835. The Sephardic Shuls Zedek v’ Shalom “Justice and Peace of 1735 and Bracha v’ Shalom Synagogue “Blessing and Peace” of 1685 are no longer operational
The sand is a reminder of the Hebrews’ 40 years in the desert after the exodus from Egypt and also the days of the Inquisition when practicing Judaism was punishable by death. Marranos* met in cellars to practice their Judaism. They covered the floor with sand to muffle the sounds of their prayers.
