Onrust, Hermanus always on my mind

Margo, Ilana and Sheryl on the rocks at Davies Pool Onrust circa late 1960s
This photograph must have been taken in December 1971 before Sascha was born – at Rotary Way on top of the mountain behind Hermanus. Either we had just been to or were going to the beach! Uncle Bennie, Aunty Irma and family probably came out for the day from Cape Town: All Edelsteins from left to right: Sophelia, Bennie, Lynette, Fanny, Maurice, Margo, Hackey, Irma and Sheryl

Number 71: With Onrus – Hermanus being only approximately one and a half hours from Cape Town, my parents often rented a house there for the school summer holidays. It took my father away from his practice and able to relax and enjoy family time.

Onrus (sometimes still spelt Onrust) and Hermanus over the years when l was growing up were safe! There was no fear of danger and we would often spend hours playing on the rocks, looking for little fish and then walk home having enjoyed a lovely time out. We played cards, read and played board games. Often,  family or friends would come from Cape Town for the day. Sometimes we would have friends accompany us on the holidays. My memories of the times we spent there are overwhelmingly positive. When Ray and l were looking to buy a holiday house, my past experience there reinforced our view that it should be in Onrus or Hermanus.

Fortunately we have enjoyed many happy holiday experiences at 57 Vijoen Street, Onrus since we bought the house in April 2005.

The attached photographs were all taken in the “early” days – way before 2005!
