Enchanting Ocean, Dreamy Humidity in Polynesia

Humans are inclined to draw lines and impose borders separating regions and countries across the vast ocean. But borders are contrived. Fish aren’t aware of them and the humans here, across the archipelagos and nations, are Polynesian.
Our snorkelling experiences were consistently magical, across each of Rangiroa’s turquoise lagoon “natural aquarium”, Bora Bora’s crystal-clear barrier reef encircled lagoon, Papeete’s clear waters renowned especially for their graceful sea turtles and the aquamarine palm fringed islets of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, where the sea appears even more pristine than anywhere else.
The Ocean’s hues of blue in Polynesia appear painted. Too pure to be “real”, framed by the dense green tropical forests on each Island. Is this paradise? For us from Cape Town, the overpowering humidity and heat preclude that epithet!
It’s a diverse, wondrous world down there, (memorised, with no photographs taken underwater). The colorful splendor of various tropical fish, majestic turtles, manta rays, sting rays, lemon sharks, giant clams. Much of the Coral is white now: bleached, stressed, but still alive. Fragile beauty under threat.
The Islands, besides perhaps for Papeete in Tahiti, feel remote, isolated. Are there even words for urgent, frenetic, hectic in the locals’ language?
We spent the better part of a day bathing, relaxing at Motu Tapu, “Queens Sacred Land”, an uninhabited Bora Bora Island. The “Queens arrival” signalled a Polynesian lunch with local dancers, singers performing. We repeated our 2020 short walk to Papeete’s local market and first time walk around Aitutaki’s Honeymoon Island wading the shallow waters on white sun-bleached sand. Gorgeous despite the overpowering heat.
