Edelstein’s with Oupa Sascha Muizenberg December 1962

Tony is at the back left. In front of him is Sheila his wife with a crying Dunne on her lap. Behind Dunne and partly obscured is Susan. Their oldest child David is sitting on the floor in the front left. At that stage they lived in Port Elizabeth.
In the middle are Sheryl’s parents Fanny, holding Margo who was 3 months old and next to her stands her husband Hackey. On Oupa’s lap sits Ilana and Sheryl is in the front, second from the right.
At the back right is Bennie. In front of him sits his wife Irma, with Lynette on her lap. In front of her sits Maurice and Sophelia, who is second from left. Bennie and Irma lived in Upington with their family.

Number 42: Sheryl’s Dad’s Dad: Oupa was living in Prieska with his housekeeper, affectionately known within the family as “Nanny”, where he had a furniture store, after his wife passed away suddenly on 21/06/1941. His cousin Herman Blum asked him why he was staying in Prieska and not moving to Upington where his son Bennie and daughter Winnie were living.  So in the late 1940s he sold his  furniture business in Prieska and moved to Upington. There he had the only furniture store in town which was jointly owned by Sam Werbeloff (his late wife Sophie’s cousin), himself, Bennie his son and Solly Werbeloff who lived in Muizenberg and was a silent partner.

In the early 1950’s they sold the furniture business to Lewis Stores and so Oupa came to Muizenberg. His sister- in – law  June, married to Abe (Boetie Edelstein’s parents) bought the house in Wherry Road without Sascha having seen it. He moved in the early 1950s to Cape Town as he was retired and wanted to be in Cape Town, particularly in Muizenberg , which was known within the Jewish Community as the ‘Goldene Medina’. Marie was the chef and “Nanny”, who brought up my Dad whose Mom had died when he was 11, was the housekeeper and kept everything together.

All the years we were growing up my Dad was the only one of Oupa’s children to live in Cape Town and Oupa my only living grandparent.

Winnie and Eric Levy (Oupa’s eldest child and her husband) lived in  Upington with their three children Sharon, Charles and Cecile and are not in this photograph.
